I'd been drowning my sorrows at the local bar
But on my way home, I didn't get very far.
I was driving down the road, going faster than I should
Trying to outrun my troubles — as if I could.
Then in the rear view mirror, I saw the flashing lights
Followed by a siren that wailed through the night.
I heard the voice of authority calling out to me,
Raise your hands up son; keep 'em where I can see.
The voice of authority was yelling at me
We're gonna lock you up son and throw away the key.
I was sitting all alone in the jail cell
Same old story, nothing new to tell.
I was contemplating how I got here once again
Buried in a heap of trouble, wishing it would end.
Then I saw a vision - thought I must still be drunk
The vision starting speaking as I sat there on my bunk
I heard the voice of authority calling out to me
It's time to change your life son, please listen to me.
The voice of authority was whispering to me
I've got the key to life, and I can set you free.
That was twenty years ago, but seems like yesterday
I was a hard-headed angry man who'd really lost his way
I was down and out, without a doubt, I had no where I could turn
Then the voice of authority taught me what I had to learn.
You can't drown your troubles in a bottle or outrun them with your truck
And you'll never make it in this life if you put your faith in luck.
I heard the voice of authority calling out to me
Let go of your troubles, give them all to me
The voice of authority whispered to me
I've got the key to life and I will set you free.
